Vast Wildlife-Rich Plains in Tanzania
Ngorongoro Crater
About the Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is located in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This crater offers a breathtaking view of a large, diverse ecosystem supporting a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big Five, among others, coming to over 25,000 animals. The crater has a unique geography with steep walls and a fertile floor, creating a self-contained environment that sustains wildlife and nature.
It is also well known for abundant birdlife, having over 500 species of birds, including flamingos, ostriches, eagles, and vultures. On the crater floor, you will see a diversity of landscapes, including grasslands and swamps, forests, and soda Lake Magadi, an alkaline soda lake that attracts thousands of flamingos. The area is also of significant cultural importance, as it is home to the Maasai people, who continue their traditional pastoralist lifestyle within the conservation area.
Ngorongoro Crater is a top safari destination in Tanzania, offering visitors a lot of opportunities to witness wildlife against a stunning natural backdrop.

Destination
The Ngorongoro Crater, located in northern Tanzania, is the largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera in the world. With steep walls rising over 600 meters, the crater creates a natural enclosure for some of Africa’s most famous wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater is part of the larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which also includes vast plains, forests, and archaeological sites.
The crater is a wildlife bliss, offering you the rare opportunity to spot the endangered black rhino, among others, including large populations of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas—all within a relatively small area, making for perfect game viewing.
Location
Ngorongoro Crater is located in the Arusha Region of northern Tanzania, and is approximately 180 kilometers west of Arusha town. It lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which borders Serengeti National Park to the northwest and is also part of the broader Serengeti ecosystem.
The crater is accessible by road from Arusha, about 3–4 hours drive, or via flights to nearby airstrips. Entry to the crater is strictly regulated to conserve its fragile ecosystem.
The best time to visit is during the dry season (June to October), when vegetation is lower and animals are easier to spot. However, the crater can be visited year-round.
