About Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda is one of Africa's great conservation success stories. Once virtually empty of large predators, the park has been re-wilded over the past decade with lion, black rhino, and elephant, establishing it as Rwanda's only Big Five destination. The park's mosaic of savannah, woodland, and interconnected lakes, the longest chain of lakes in Rwanda, supports hippo, crocodile, zebra, topi, buffalo, and over 500 bird species. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema offer extraordinary wildlife viewing from the water. Managed in partnership with African Parks, Akagera is increasingly recognised as a model for community-centred conservation in Africa.
