Overview
From December to March, the Great Migration gathers on the short-grass plains around Ndutu, where the southern Serengeti meets the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Calving usually takes place from January to March, with a peak often in February. Thousands of calves may be born in a day during the busiest weeks. Lion, cheetah and hyena follow the herds, and the open ground makes this a rewarding place to watch wildlife.
This six-day safari begins with a morning on the floor of Ngorongoro Crater. Then you spend three nights in Ndutu, with two full days to explore the calving grounds. Our featured stay is Lake Masek Tented Lodge, on the shore of a soda lake, with five alternative camps to suit different styles and budgets. A final afternoon in the Seronera Valley adds time with the Serengeti's resident big cats before you fly back to Arusha.
Travelling between June and October? We can plan a different route through the western or northern Serengeti to suit the seasonal herd movements. The camps and daily itinerary change for those months. Ask us to match the route to your dates, with no promise of a river crossing or a particular sighting.

Lake Masek Tented Lodge (our featured stay)
Canvas suites sit on raised wooden decks, each with a private terrace and an outdoor shower. Between game drives, relax by the swimming pool or on the main terrace overlooking Lake Masek. The lodge uses solar power and welcomes children. Interconnected family tents are available, with the room layout confirmed when we plan your stay.
Lemala Ndutu Tented Camp
An intimate seasonal tented camp in the Ndutu area, close to the marshes and southern plains. Picnic meals can be arranged so you can spend longer out with your guide when the herds are within reach.
Olakira Migration Camp
A mobile camp that moves to Ndutu from December to March. Its mesh-enclosed sleeping areas let you enjoy the night sky from your tent, while evenings bring time around the campfire. Children aged five and older are welcome.
Ndutu Under Canvas
A seasonal tented camp that follows the migration onto the southern plains. It suits travellers who want an intimate stay under canvas, with the exact seasonal location and operating dates checked before booking.
Ndutu Safari Lodge
A long-established permanent lodge among acacias near Lake Ndutu. Its relaxed setting is a good option for families and travellers who prefer a lodge base. Rooms are in demand during the peak calving months.
Ndutu Kati Kati Camp
A straightforward tented camp with en-suite facilities and evenings around the campfire. It is an option for travellers who want to prioritise time on the plains, with seasonal location and availability confirmed for their dates.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arusha to the Ngorongoro Highlands
Leave Arusha and climb into the cool, green Ngorongoro highlands. Allow roughly four to five hours by road, depending on your lodge and stops. A flight to Lake Manyara airstrip followed by a road transfer can be quoted as an alternative. Arrive with time to settle in before dinner. Your first night puts you within reach of an early crater visit tomorrow. The listed properties have different settings: some are on or near the rim, while Neptune is near the conservation area's entrance. Crater views and descent times depend on your chosen lodge. Evenings can be cold, so keep a warm layer handy.
Day 2Ngorongoro Crater to the Ndutu Plains
Spend the morning on the crater floor, looking for black rhino, lion, hyena and elephant bulls. Flamingos may gather on the soda lake when conditions suit them. After a picnic lunch, climb out and continue across the conservation area to Ndutu. Allow around two to three hours after leaving the crater area, with extra time for wildlife stops and road conditions. As the highlands open into short-grass plains, look for the first wildebeest herds. Reach camp in the late afternoon and settle in for the first of three nights.
Day 3Ndutu Calving Plains: Full Day
Head out at dawn, when predators are often active, and let your guide work the plains using that morning's herd reports. During the main calving weeks, newborn wildebeest can be on their feet within minutes of birth. Watch for cheetah on the open grass, lions near the herds and hyenas moving between them. Take a picnic lunch so you can stay out through the afternoon. Rain keeps the plains green but can make black-cotton tracks muddy, so your guide adapts the route to conditions. Calving and hunts happen on nature's schedule.
Day 4Ndutu Marshes, Lakes and Woodland
A second full day gives you time to explore a different part of Ndutu or return to a promising sighting. Your guide may visit Big Marsh and Small Marsh, then the acacia woodland around Lakes Ndutu and Masek. Look for cats resting in shade, giraffes browsing and waterbirds near the lakes, with cheetah more likely on the surrounding open plains. The day's route follows the wildlife and track conditions. Return to camp with time for a drink and a quiet evening before dinner.
Day 5Ndutu to Central Serengeti (Seronera)
Drive north into Serengeti National Park and on to the Seronera Valley. Allow about three hours for the transfer, often longer with game viewing and park formalities. Your guide chooses the appropriate access route for your camp and conditions. Seronera's year-round water supports resident wildlife even when the migration is elsewhere. Look for leopard along the river courses, lion prides and cheetah on the open plains during an afternoon game drive. An optional sunrise balloon flight with a bush breakfast can be arranged for tomorrow if your departure schedule allows.
Day 6Seronera: Morning Game Drive and Flight to Arusha
Take a final morning game drive if your flight schedule permits, then transfer to Seronera airstrip for the flight to Arusha. If you choose the optional balloon safari, we plan the morning around that activity and your departure time. Share your onward flight details before booking so we can allow suitable connection time and confirm any transfer between Arusha and Kilimanjaro airports. Your quote sets out the airfare and baggage allowance. End of Saringi Tours services.

Good to Know
The southern migration season usually runs from December to March, with most calving from January to March and a peak often in February. Rainfall affects herd locations, and births, hunts and particular wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Ndutu camps fill early, so book once your dates are set.
Travelling between June and October? Ask us for a different migration route. The western corridor and Grumeti area are usually relevant around June and July, while the northern Serengeti and Mara River are generally the focus from July to October. Camp choices and travel arrangements change with the season; river crossings are never guaranteed.
The optional sunrise balloon flight can be arranged for Day 6, subject to weather, availability and your Seronera flight time. It is booked and priced separately and may replace the final morning game drive.
