About Tsavo East

Tsavo East National Park is Kenya's largest national park, covering roughly 13,747 km² of vast open plains, dry bush and red-earth tracks. Its famous red elephants are African savannah elephants coated in the iron-rich dust they use to bathe and protect their skin. Elephant families, buffalo, giraffe and zebra move through this expansive landscape, while lions and other predators reward patient game drives. The Galana River brings water and green riverine habitat to the semi-arid wilderness, with hippos, crocodiles and birdlife along its banks. Above the river stretches the Yatta Plateau, an ancient lava flow and one of the park's defining geological features. Routes around Aruba Dam and the southern plains offer rewarding wildlife viewing, though sightings and access depend on conditions. Between Nairobi and the Kenyan coast, Tsavo East pairs naturally with Amboseli, Tsavo West or a beach stay at Diani. These photographs were taken on a Saringi Tours field trip, from the welcome at Bachuma Gate to elephant encounters on the red tracks.

Best Time to Visit Tsavo East

Tsavo East can be visited year-round. The drier months, generally June–October and January–February, are often best for game viewing as animals gather near available water and vegetation is less dense. Rainier periods, typically March–May and November–December, can bring greener scenery and rewarding birdwatching, but some tracks may be harder to navigate. Rainfall varies from year to year; our guides plan each route around current conditions.
